Social Work

Grampian Society for the Blind is a charity which provides support and advice to about 2500 people with a severe visual impairment.

Grampian Society for the Blind holds the register of anyone who is registered as either blind or partially sighted and provides a direct service to them on behalf of the three councils, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

In Scotland there is a difference between being certified and registered. While Grampian Society for the Blind holds the register of blindness and partial sight, we do not have the power to certify someone as blind or partially sighted, this can only be done by a consultant ophthalmologist.

The Registration Process
• Visit or contact your GP to make them aware of your sight problem. Your GP may then refer you to the Eye Clinic.
• A consultant ophthalmologist will make the decision whether registration is appropriate. With your consent they will complete a BP1.
• The BP1 is forwarded to Grampian Society for the Blind where your details are entered into the register.
• Once we receive the BP1, contact will be made by a Grampian Society for the Blind worker within 2 weeks.
• At any stage you can contact Grampian Society for the Blind directly for advice and support.

The fieldworkers at Grampian Society for the Blind know that registration may be a traumatic time for you. In order to support you through this time, we aim to visit as soon as possible after certification. We also aim to make you aware of any benefits or equipment that may be of help.

If you would like to discuss any of these issues further then please contact us at the address or phone number on the front page.
